Pressing the Kingston Black

We're pressing the last of the 2010 harvest today.  3 Tonnes of Kingston Black apples are going through the press.  This morning I took a quick video and uploaded to you tube, so you can see the apples going into the press, and out as juice.

I need to add up the final figures, but we will have pressed somewhere in the region of 70 Tonnes of apples and pears this year.  We've made more pure juice this year, and cider volumes will be similar to last year.  We've made less perry, as perry pears are having an "off" year in terms of production - enough for sparkling perry though, and we will be pressing some dessert pears for our next dessert pear wine.

Talking of which, we will be have something to anounce next week......!

Simon, I'm curious as to why you have a Voran washer/elevator, but still use the Mill bolted onto the press. I've seen this elevator with a mill attached on a video of the cidermaking at Ampleforth Abbey. It has the advantage of delivering the pomace straight onto the press bed. Cuts out all that tiresome shovelling of pomace, I certainly wish I had one...

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark, a bit late in replying as the comments were not being published, and I've only just realised! The elevator feeds the existing mill at the moment as I am hoping that we will be upgrading our press to a belt press in the not too distant future, although we are likely to be using it again this year, as I've spent money on Sparkling equipment instead!

Cheers, Simon
